The History Museum is situated at the
seafront, in the north-west of the city. Ιt is housed in a neoclassical
building. It contains items from the Byzantine, Medieval and modern times.
Exhibits coming from the Cretan folk culture are presented here. Moreover,
there are hagiographies and icons from the Cretan School of Hagiοgraphy.
Additionally, visitors have the chance to see a Cretan house as well as
memorabillia of the great author Nikos Kazantzakis. Finally, one of the
masterpieces painted by the top cretan painter Domenicus Theotocopoulos (El
Greco) is kept in a special room.
