This elaborate fountain and the square
where it stands consist the heart of the city of Iraklio. The fountain was
constructed by Francisco Morozini, whom it was named after, during the
first decades of the 17th century. It is exquisitely sculpted and
decorated with images inspired from the mythology, the sea and the animal
kingdom. The four lions the mouths of which the water came out, prevail. On
the top of the fountain there used to be a huge statue of Poseidon, the
sea god, which collapsed probably because of an earthquake.
