In the south of Loggia stands the
Basilica of St. Marcus, which was built, just like the rest of the
buildings of the square in miniature of the central square of Venice. It
was dedicated to the Venetians' patron saint, St. Marcus. The Basilica
belonged to the Duke (Governor-General) and it was used as the Dukes' burial place. During the Turkish conquest, it was transformed into a
mosque.
